The word backboard suggests a board affixed to the back of a map. This is not the case at all! A backboard in the pull down roller map world is acutally a metal encasing used to mount a roller map. The backboard is a necessary accessory to pull down maps you wish to mount on your wipeboard /chalkboard rail or to a wall. The roller holding the maps is mounted within the backboard incasing. Without the backboard, one would be unable to mount the map. If you are looking for custom map sets with backboards, please visit us at Classroom Maps AtoZ

How to Mount Pull Down Roller Maps
Mounting
pull down or roller maps in a classroom can be more tricky than you would
imagine. First, you must decide if you would like to mount your roller or pull
down map on a wall or from the top rail of a wipe board or chalkboard. For
those choosing to use a wall mount, you must ensure that the pull down / roller
map you are purchasing is mounted on a backboard. This metal encasing around
the map will be necessary for a wall or wipe/chalkboard mount. Then, you will
need to ensure the correct mounting hardware for a wall mount. This will depend
upon how many maps are on your roller. The heavier the roller, the sturdier the
mount will need to be. If you have decided that you want your pull down /
roller map to be mounted on the rail of your chalk or wipe board, you must
begin by measuring the height of the top rail. This will typically be one or
two inches. You will choose the hooks appropriate for that height. For more
